Wayne Bishop, a revered emeritus Professor of Mathematics and a distinguished former chair of the Department of Mathematics at California State University, Los Angeles, passed away peacefully on April 30 at Huntington Hospital. Wayne’s passing is deeply felt by his family, colleagues, and the many students whose lives he touched during his remarkable 50-year tenure at Cal State LA.
He began his career as a high school teacher before pursuing higher education, earning his Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from the University of Northern Iowa, a Master's from Northwestern University, and a Ph.D. from Western Michigan University.
Professor Bishop joined the faculty at Cal State LA in 1972, where he taught various mathematics courses. Known for his commitment to high standards and genuine opportunity in education, Wayne also served at Pasadena City College and as a Fulbright Professor in Mexico City. His influence extended beyond the classroom through various state-level educational panels and a lifelong mentorship of students, including Jaime Escalante of "Stand and Deliver" fame.
His legacy is characterized by his commitment to mathematics education, his dedication to his students, and his enduring positivity. While there will not be a funeral, a celebration of Wayne’s life is planned for the coming months, promising a fitting tribute to a remarkable educator and mentor. He will be profoundly missed.
